Roller Skaters

How do I start roller skatING in Berlin?

Maybe you remember one of those cheesy romance movies from America. Those movies with a date at the roller rink. When you were a kid in school, did you ride around on your first roller skates, in the schoolyard? Probably roller skating has also disappeared from the scene in your youth. That is a great pity. Maybe you get it too: Social media, influencers, and television segments have singled out roller skates for adults as a new trend. And quite rightly so. It’s a sport that you can do as a hobby almost anywhere and at any time. So get into your roller skates and let’s go. Would you like to learn how to skate at your local roller rink or directly in the park? We have explored this topic for you.

The five steps to learning to roller skate:

Getting your roller skates and protective gear together.
Find a suitable location.
Try your first movements on the roller skates.
Practice starting.
Learn to stop properly.

A BIT OF EQUIPMENT : THE RIGHT ROLLER SKATES

Actually, it could start immediately, but a little preparation is already necessary. You certainly don’t have roller skates lying around in the closet. If you do, don’t let that stop you. Most people have to get a pair of roller skates first. If you want to get into this sport first, you can rent roller skates at many sporting goods stores. This is practical because you can try them out at your leisure. After a few days you can simply return the “test shoes”. Once you have tasted blood, you should buy your own pair. Simple roller skates for adults without many accessories or special equipment you can buy for little money. With time, you will surely focus on optimal wheels, stoppers or ball bearings. For your start, a simple pair of roller skates is sufficient in any case.

No, the following is not mandatory, but an important advice: Wear a helmet and maybe also pads for your knees or elbows. Visually, this may not suit you. But especially if you want to learn to roller skating, you will certainly fall down once or twice. And here of course: Safety first! At the beginning of your roller skating career, you can simply fall back on a normal bicycle helmet. But a complete equipment is at least in the long run in any case sensible.

YOUR FIRST STEPS ON WHEELS

Learning to roller skate is not that hard. As with all other sports, you should start with the basics. It’s best to find a roller skating rink nearby. Here you will have good ground conditions and you may even be able to get a tip from more experienced riders. Of course, you can also take your first steps at many other places. The important thing is that you have a smooth floor and don’t come into conflict with car drivers or cyclists. Maybe there’s a bike path, a large parking lot, or a quiet street where you can start.

Take a friend or family member with you on your first ride. That way, you’ll have a little support right away to help you keep your balance. If you do fall, your companion will help you get back on your feet. Is your first ride unaccompanied? Then look for a fence or railing. You can hold onto it while you get a feel for your skates and how to ride.

THE ABSOLUTE BASICS IN ROLLER SKATING

Enough preparation, now let’s really get started. Of course, an elaborate stunt or a sweeping spin is not a suitable way to get started. First you should advance at all, let yourself roll out and try the stoppers.

FIRST MOVEMENTS

Getting moving first is important when you first want to roller skating. By moving your legs, you can get a little momentum. Keep both legs on the ground at the beginning. This will give you an idea of how it feels to ride on wheels without falling or just rolling away. Just keep moving your legs back and forth. Both skates always remain firmly on the ground. This shallow start is especially good for improving your sense of balance. When you feel really confident in this movement, you can start skating.

APPROACH

Next, you’ll definitely want to get off the ground. To start the ride, you need to push off slightly. Pull one skate forward and catch up with the other. Keep alternating: one leg pulls forward and the other follows. Now slowly pick up speed. Alternate between pulling one skate forward and pulling the other forward. You will have to slowly increase the speed and lift the skates. Start your ride very slowly. After a few steps, you will be able to skate a distance or a large circle in a relaxed manner.

BRAKE CORRECTLY

You can already stand on your wheels and ride easy routes. Riding roller skates is not that difficult. However, braking is at least as important as riding safely. You can not and do not always want to let the momentum from the ride simply roll out. You also need to be able to brake to prevent a collision on the roller skating rink nearby. This is where the two stoppers help you. Push the stopper towards the ground. But do not stop abruptly at full speed. For training, brake at very slow speed, otherwise you will surely fall. Any contact between the ground and the stopper will slow you down further. Braking is at least as important as riding.

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT!

Roller skates certainly do not belong in the basement, but on your feet on the streets. Over time, you will be more confident and more experienced on the road. You can then also ride around with different driving styles and small tricks. Figures or a fast pace will soon no longer be a problem. Just give it a try. As everywhere, practice makes perfect!
